‘I highly recommend her services and would definitely call upon her another time.’
After many unsuccessful job applications and interviews, and somewhat stale, if not with complete writers block, last year I came across one of Melanie’s articles on the jobs.ac.uk website. Over a couple of telephone calls, Melanie coached me in my job applications and helped me find the words and phrases right for myself and the specific job requirements.
Melanie seemed to immediately understand the help I needed, and without waffle or generalities actively listened and made useful, relevant suggestions. Following this, and with some light interview coaching the day before from Melanie, I was offered a job! Melanie was a marvellous help to me and always managed to fit in times to talk with me. I highly recommend her services and would definitely call upon her another time.
‘…we worked as a team and Melanie has helped me make a significant improvement to my life.’
Melanie has been a huge help in so many areas of my life. In our sessions, she facilitated and empowered me to review and improve many areas of my day to day life. She listened patiently, seeking to understand my point of view and accepting it without judgement no matter how absurd it sounded! There were many occasions when she suggested different ways for me to do things or strategies to use to overcome difficulties I faced. These were always constructive and even if I felt that they did not fit with my outlook or circumstances, Melanie was prepared to discuss and suggest alternatives – she worked very hard to understand my individual circumstances and so find solutions that would work for me. In our sessions I would say that we worked as a team and Melanie has helped me make a significant improvement to my life.
“…an enormous help in guiding me to positive outcomes.”
I have turned to Melanie Allen several times over the past few years – usually at times of professional or personal difficulty. Her Career and Life Coaching is always incredibly useful, insightful and practical. She is quick to understand the underlying issues and – using her warmth and humanity – has been an enormous help in guiding me towards positive outcomes. I would recommend her to anyone needing clear, non-judgemental and wise guidance either in their professional or private lives.
“…a very disciplined, hands-on approach.”
Melanie coached me at a time when I was struggling to balance a demanding workload and tricky family commitments. As well as a sense of losing perspective about what was important and what wasn’t, I was conscious of an increasing lack of confidence in my ability to deliver all the many things that were expected of me both professionally and domestically. The coaching process helped enormously. Melanie gave me the space and encouragement to explore why problems were arising and to look beyond the obvious answers. She also took a very disciplined, hands-on approach which involved practical activities – my ‘homework’ – to reinforce new ways of responding to familiar situations. I found that within a short period I no longer felt pressured to give immediate answers to requests but was able to step back and think through situations to decide on the best – rather than the expected – course of action. She was at all times empathetic and supportive – I wholeheartedly recommend her services.
“Melanie’s insight and understanding helped me to see what the important issue was.”
I started coaching sessions with Melanie because I felt I was going nowhere in my work. I didn’t know what was stopping me from moving on. As we talked, it became clear that the problem wasn’t a career issue, but the fallout from something that had happened in my personal life earlier in the year. I thought I could get on with my career plans separately and ignore it, but I couldn’t. During our second session, Melanie stopped what we were doing and asked me if there was anything else going on, because she felt that we kept bumping up against something. I told her about what had happened and I realised how confused and upset I still was. I saw how it had affected my confidence and my whole outlook. Melanie’s insight and understanding helped me to see what the important issue was and talk it though without feeling that I would fall apart. The career issue became clearer and I’ve now moved on.
“the variety of techniques that Melanie employed kept the sessions interesting and fresh.”
I approached Melanie for support in my work as an acupuncturist. I work as a sole trader and I felt I was lacking a place in my work life in which I could talk about my role. We mapped out what I wanted to use the sessions for and decided that the coaching could be a safe place in which I could discuss issues affecting my work, professional development and mapping out future roles and initiatives.
Melanie employed diverse and creative techniques to guide me through these processes. Sometimes we would talk and at other times she would use models and tools to provide a framework for our work together. I liked the variety of techniques that Melanie employed and this kept the sessions interesting and fresh.
One of Melanie’s greatest attributes is her ability to listen. She not only works hard to hear but also has a knack of getting under or behind subtexts. This allowed me to consider issues in new and more complex ways than I sometimes presented them. I always felt that I worked hard under her guidance. She encouraged me to analyse why I chose to work in the way I did and identify ways of supporting myself and moving my clinic practice forward. I left every session with a clearer focus and vision of who I was as an acupuncturist and a better understanding of my own motivations.
Melanie also helped me to celebrate my successes. Working alone does not offer many opportunities in which to do this and can at times feel isolating. Knowing I had a space in which I could talk about what was going well (as well as what wasn’t going so well) was really important for my own motivation and work related self-esteem.
I see Melanie as a wise sage. That sounds rather paganistic, which she isn’t at all! She brings to her role as coach, years of rich and varied life experience. Her interest in people has instilled in her a warmth and compassion that shines through and although she can be tough (ie making me work in the sessions) she can also provide empathy, understanding and fierce support.
Working with Melanie gave me a strong sense of my own brand and business. The coaching moved me on in my own development and helped build my brand into a successful busy business.
“I didn’t want to use the organisation’s executive coaches as there could have been a conflict of interest, as they were retained by the company.”
I started having sessions with Melanie because I was hating my work and needed someone to talk it through with. A colleague had recommended her. I didn’t want to use the organisation’s executive coaches as there could have been a conflict of interest, as they were retained by the company.
She has helped me work out what to do, not just in work but in my personal life too. She understood the issues and the political and corporate environment. I would have got there myself in the end, but our sessions helped me get to where I am now faster and in a more considered way. She helped me to gain insight into my own way of working, to use myself more in a work situation and to be more flexible. Sometimes it was uncomfortable, but she was persistent and made me look my fears in the eye. We also had fun, and I looked forward to the sessions each week.
“She helped me gain perspective on inter-relational issues and to work out what was really important in relationships at work.”
My coaching sessions with Melanie helped me find my soul and put me in touch with feelings ahead of thoughts. She was friendly, she put me at ease and was good at “tea and sympathy”, which I needed to begin with. I always leave with more energy than I had when I arrived. She was a good listener, reflecting back what she was seeing and hearing from me, which was very useful.
She quickly got to grips with my situation, which expedited our sessions. She helped me gain perspective on inter-relational issues and to work out what was really important in relationships at work. I don’t think the fact that her background was in corporate training made any difference to our sessions. She had access to other resources that I didn’t (insight, whole systems, being present in the moment, etc).
When I first contacted Melanie, I was looking for a structured approach to resolving my issues and help in coping with my situation. I wanted a quick fix, which she said didn’t usually happen, so I had to adjust my thinking and accept the kind of help she gave me. I might have felt more comfortable with a more structured approach but I soon realized that my ‘shadow person’ needed to come out and that a structured approach wasn’t necessarily going to give me that. I stopped the sessions when I thought I was OK. But found I wasn’t and came back.
I would recommend Melanie to all the people looking to connect with something deeper than they have today.
Career Coaching by Phone: “…it generated a lot more interest from potential employers, recently resulting in two interviews within a week!”
I first came across Melanie Allen via jobs.ac.uk. At the time, I was experiencing difficulty in finding suitable employment in my chosen fields of engineering consultancy, science tuition and book-publishing, as I wear three hats. Since I am London-based and Melanie is based in Leeds, I decided to obtain advice over the telephone.
In the first instance, it was agreed that I needed to re-vamp my Curriculum Vitae and Melanie advised me on making massive improvements, to the extent that it generated a lot more interest from potential employers, recently resulting in two interviews within a week! Help and advice was also given on the all-important covering letters to go with these CV’s and for other projects that I had in mind at the time.
The next logical step was to get some down-to-earth advice on interview technique. So I telephoned Melanie again. I must say that Melanie has a first-class telephone manner and helped me gain confidence in all work-related situations and is always there for ‘top-ups’ when I need to come back from time-to-time.
Therefore, I have no hesitation in recommending Melanie Allen to anyone experiencing work-related problems – or even if you’re don’t (maybe you just want to seek promotion, or change jobs etc) as she always seems to come up with the goods. Telephone conversations with her are like talking to a friend in the room – so much so that I always have a cup of tea on hand!
